Stones, Tones & Jewellery's New Gold Standard
OCTOBER 12, 2016
There’s a new alchemy in the mix of precious metals, diamonds, and coloured gemstones.
Beauty’s new by-word is fair – and traditional hand-finished sophistication in jewellery is no longer legitimately luxurious unless it also comes ethically sourced and fairmined.
Positive Luxury is delighted to recommend brands doing good things – and doing good business too. Foremost is Australia’s Luca Jouel, awarded the Butterfly Mark, whose actions safeguard vulnerable children and support responsible manufacturers in the field. In addition, Tereena Lucas, chief designer, is a fellow member of the Gemmological Association of Australia (FGAA) and a member of the Jewellers Association of Australia (JAA).
The Butterfly Mark, powered by Positive Luxury, is awarded to luxury lifestyle brands that take pride in their craftsmanship, service, and design, whilst having a positive social impact and respect for our shared environment. The Butterfly Mark offers wordless reassurance that Luca Jouel is a brand to trust.
Other brands we can recommend as committed to integrity, fair play and luxury’s new good governance are Argyle Pink Diamonds, Stephen Webster, House of Garrard, Arctic Circle and Flamingo Jewellery.
An exciting story to watch is the discussion surrounding synthetic versus non-synthetic gemstones. Synthetic stones are the exact same product only their properties are born of a scientist’s high-tech lab. Current debate centers on whether market demand for these ‘too perfect’ stones will overtake naturally occurring stones (similar to what happened with pearls). Currently, it looks as though the earth’s natural imperfections are what’s driving demand – for an authenticity that is naturally beautiful. Hence the continuing need to ensure non-synthetic stones are mined fairly.
The Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) is at the forefront of a growing global movement of miners, support organizations, and market players, working together towards the positive transformation of the artisanal and small-scale gold mining sector globally. Formed to support Fairmined certified mining organizations, the objective is to help each other get on with fair practices.

Luca Jouel - The Making of an Ethical Jewellery Brand
Since Luca Jouel's conception in 2010 I have had a myriad of choices and decisions to make about what kind of jewellery brand I truly wished to create. Options have included fashion versus fine jewellery, common semi-precious stones and metals versus the harder-to-come-by higher priced precious stones and metals, local Australian manufacture versus sourcing production abroad, mass production models versus one-off designs, developing a targeted limited range of designs versus expressing my creativity without limits... and many more. Faced with these options I chose the latter in most cases because in my heart of hearts creating a jewellery brand by just looking at the bottom line would have simply held no meaning for me.
What concerned me the most in the decision-making process that was my journey to creating a jewellery brand that is unique and different, was the matter of creating fine jewellery of quality. Creating timeless pieces that could be kept over time and perhaps even passed on from generation to generation. Creating pieces that had been made ethically with consideration of the artisans and the finite resources necessary in the making of jewellery. This brought me firmly to the question of who do I engage with to help create each Luca Jouel piece?
Starting with the design process, how would the pieces that I envisioned in my mind come to life? Today, we have at our disposal a multitude of methods and techniques to craft and create jewellery pieces. These include computer automated design and manufacture, hand assembly and complete hand making; I decided I would use a combination of these methods depending on the complexity of the piece and the resources needed; as a self-financed start-up venture budget constraints heavily influence the choice of production method. So I enlisted the expertise of three experienced international CAD designers, a local master jeweller of more than 30 years experience, one of the best Australian jewellery manufacturing houses, a masterful diamond setter born abroad but now calling Australia home, and international finest quality chain makers. Expressly important to the vetting process was the fact that, as either sole traders or larger companies, these people uphold the same ethical standards of business practice that I value and believe need to be primary factors of importance for any jewellery brand.
The other key ingredient of many beautiful jewellery pieces are of course the diamonds and coloured gemstones. Two particularly important challenges exist in purchasing suitable stones, namely authenticity with regards to type and possible treatments- there are many imitation, synthetic and artificially treated stones in the market-, and issues relating to the actual supply chain from mine to market. Over the course of my life I have had two major passions, holistic health care and gemstones. I have essentially worked in one or the other or both at the same time, with most of my jewellery experience gained from my time working for a prominent Australian Jewellery valuation company... not as a business owner purchasing stones. So how was I, a single person essentially re-entering quite a closed industry as a purchaser, going to create a successful jewellery brand as a result of adequate purchasing choices mindful of my ethical values?
With a background in gemmology I am astute at seeking out gemstones to compliment the Luca Jouel aesthetic I wish to create by using a variety of criteria. I have a love of the natural, unusual, symbolic, and finest quality; this does not mean I always choose the finest quality though, as I believe beauty is also to be found in the imperfect too. Now back to the ethics, this I have found to be the far more challenging aspect. It would be much easier to just randomly purchase stones, countless are on offer worldwide. The whole industry is filled with contentious issues that start from the country where the stone was mined, to who did the mining- adult or child? Are they adequately remunerated with a good living wage? What's happening to the environment in the area as a consequence of the mining practices? What about the lapidaries charged with cutting and polishing the stones? What about the employees of the suppliers? ... There are a significant amount of people involved in the whole supply chain, and as an individual operating right at the end of this chain, complete transparency proves very difficult to obtain. This is where you have to build relationships with people and establish trust, and this has to be founded upon a mutual understanding of what constitutes rightful business practices. Simple right? Actually no, far from it. Many suppliers have agreements in place with much larger companies that haven’t, to date, been incentivized to formalize in writing the actual nature of their business practices over and above certifying their diamonds to be conflict free; or they may be happy with the status quo because nobody else in the industry is really rocking the boat and digging deeper– they may feel that the part they play in the overall chain is fair and equitable and/or are resistant to change and accept the way things simply are and so feel no need to get any further involved when their day to day operations are running smoothly; and we haven’t even looked at the coloured stone suppliers, which perhaps is the sector with most difficulty in advocating transparency and integrity in their business practices. And even when you are able to find an ethical supplier that is happy to supply you as a boutique company, they actually might not carry the exact stock you require to complete your designs. Tricky business all round.
And so it remains a work in progress as new opportunities present themselves. It is important for awareness of all the issues involved to continue to gain exposure, which in turn will serve to place pressure for adequate transparency right back at the beginning of the supply chain. To be fair the issues are very complex, and this is an industry hailing from antiquity where things operate in a certain way. However, this should not impair progress or continuous improvement in this field which is why Luca Jouel is proud to be part of the Positive Luxury community of brands to trust. Positive Luxury’s mission is to inspire people to buy better and influence brands to do better by awarding luxury lifestyle brands with the Butterfly Mark, in recognition of their commitment to protect our planet, its people and resources and continuous investment in social good and environmental responsibility. Positive Luxury’s co-founders Diana Verde Nieto and Karen Hanton MBE, have devised a rigorous assessment process formulated with the help of an experienced sustainability council and external institutional partners, to evaluate companies across the following five areas: governance, social framework, environmental framework, philanthropy and innovation. Brands carrying the Butterfly Mark offer consumers immediate and wordless reassurance that a brand can be trusted and thereby influence positive purchasing decisions. Consequently, if consumers are empowered to ‘buy better’, suppliers in turn will ultimately adhere to responsible business practices over the long-term. It all starts with a commitment to try and do better, always.

Brand Preview Picks with Buying Director, Candice Fragis
So wonderful to wake up to this news this morning!!
Buying & Merchandising Director at Farfetch, Candice Fragis, makes her top sustainable brand picks ahead of Brand Preview. Candice has worked as a buyer for over 12 years with Browns, Saks Fifth Avenue, Net-a-Porter and now Farfetch. She was behind the launch of Net-a-Porter’s sportswear arm. Candice chose Luca Jouel, Behno, Cecilia Hammarborg, ABURY and Ally Bee as her favourite brands!
Candice thinks Luca Jouel has a clear market and would sit well alongside other fine jewellery brands. “The aesthetic and design feel authentic and rustic whilst still having a luxe finish. The ethics are reassuring rather than being a focus which is important as it keeps the focus on the product,” she explains.

Tereena Lucas, Kian Dastyar for Luca Jouel of Australia, was Awarded: Honorable Mention Prize in Jewelry Competition for the Reina Nostalgia Project
The design has evolved from the unusual and striking pair of spotty diamond slices I purchased in Hong Kong earlier this year. I wanted to capture their old-worldly charm and was reminded of some beautiful over-exposed photos I had taken one snowy night in the Old Town of Salzburg in 2010. The two necklaces have been created in 18ct yellow and rose gold. The pendant and chain designs were customed using CAD by Kian Dastyar where the pendants each consist of two parts that have been carefully laser welded together to encase the delicate slices. Combinations of high polish and satin matte finishes have been applied to the pendants and chains.
